Yummy ostrich kebobs came with rice pilaf, mashed potatoes (with ketchup, which is always referred to as "tomato sauce"), and a lovely soup! |

Got Ostrich? In each place that my family and I have been to, we have tried to experience the food of the country. Kristin got to eat a bat in Palau and Mom and Dad have been adventurous in their eating as well. I went with my roommate Stephaney to a Grill restaurant at the Waterfront Marina, and I noticed that they featured some African cuisine meals. They had a variety of things like warthog, snake, kudo, alligator (sorry Gator fans!), and ostrich. Well—I have had alligator before, and I wasn’t yet ready for snake, so I wanted to get ostrich. I also got ostrich because Dad was telling me that instead of a turducken in South Africa, they have an ostriducken!!! I have to say, it was REALLY good! Another thing that I noticed is that South Africans put ketchup (or Tomato Sauce as they call it) on everything!! When I mean everything—I mean everything! One of the side dishes that I had with my ostrich were mashed potatoes with tomato sauce. These were the best that I have EVER had!!! J During my time here in South Africa, I am trying to be good and follow certain recipes from Jenny Craig. I have made such good progress so far on the program that I don’t want to go overboard with the food. I am managing the portions and watching what I am eating. J |

At graduation, Mom, Kate Hutchinson, and her mom all admired my South African money. I had to order it two days in advance from the currency exchange near my apartment in Los Angeles' World Trade Center.

Let the journey begin! What happens now? I start my Public Relations Internship on Monday. We are going to be working four days a week at a public relations firm in Cape Town. I think that it is going to be very exciting since this will be my first official internship at a public relations firm. We also have plenty of activities planned in the next couple of week like learning how to golf (Kristin would approve!), visiting Robben Island, exploring Cape Town on a tour, and some other activities. Internet access is a bit limited here in Cape Town, but I am going to try and post on my web site and blog as much as I can. Thank you for all of your support!J Best Wishes,
Karen |
